10 Years of Sharing Near-Misses

The National Firefighter Near Miss Reporting System was launched August 2005 at Fire Rescue International. At the time, it was a revolutionary idea: sharing near-misses to prevent future accidents and improve safety. Fire service thought-leaders came together to develop this system and promoted it to the fire service community over the last 10 years. Today, the concept is much more widely accepted. This doesn’t mean our work is done. Near-miss reporting is more important than ever to develop a national safety picture. Innovative training that focuses on root-causes continues to be imperative.
